Sun Valley Fishing Report

Silver Creek:

Brown Drakes have ended on Silver Creek but the fishing on Silver Creek as a whole has not been bad. Every section has been fishing a little different. The upper end of the Nature Conservancy section has been pretty good with #16 pmd's  and #20 & #22 Baetis with occasional (#12) Green Drakes. The warmer the day the earlier you want to be on the water. The farther downstream you go and into the pond the Callibaetis have been moderate from about noon to 2 pm. While Baetis have been coming off, they have been strong one day and mild the next with no real consistent time between 8:30 and 11 am. Damsel flies have been getting more and more abundant and small (like #14 & #16) beetles have also been working. The Green Drakes should improve over the next week in the Nature Conservancy and RR sections. The evening fishing should only get better as well the next few weeks. Should you come down for an evening bring small Baetis patterns, #16 pmd's, #16 olive caddis and LOTS of mosquito repellent. If you are lucky you may even get a Green Drake spinner fall.

Big Wood River:

Over the course of the last week the Big Wood has dropped from approx. 1,300 cfs to its current flow of 680 cfs. Look for the flow to bump back up with the warm weather we are now having. The river has gone from essentially unfishable levels to a fishable level again. While the water downstream of Ketchum is not gin clear it is clear enough. Think #12 Copper Johns, #12 Pheasant Tails and #8 black or brown Girdle Bugs with streamer fishing working as well. As far as hatches go it's been pretty sparse, BUT, the golden stones and especially Green Drakes should be getting going soon. When the Green Drakes do start to come off on the Big Wood it should be one of the better years given the lower water levels.

Big Lost River:

The Lower Big Lost was up over 700 cfs last week and has since dropped to its current flow of 591 cfs. At 591 cfs it's pretty swift but wadeable for those willing to fish and wade super swift water. Think nymphing with small zebra midges to big Copper Johns and Lightning Bugs. Golden Stones and #16 pmd's should get better if the river remains wadeable. Check the water flow prior to heading over.

The Copper Basin area is still a bit too high to make it a worthwhile trip. but we are less than two weeks away from good stuff.
